Seriously, this ad about Sons of Anarchy and motorcycle gangs and clubs bothers me. Perhaps more than it should. But when you think about it, this is so reckless.
I grew up with 1%'ers in my home. My father rode with an M.C., one of the original M.C.'s, and they didn't find any humor in RUBS, Posers or Wanna Be's. The friends of my father saw every rider in one of the following categories:
1. M.C. - either theirs or a rival club
2. Wanna Be's - We often call them RUBS or Posers nowadays, but to them, these were Wanna Be's.
3. Rice Grinders - The men who rode metrics, who weren't even really "riders".
4. Hobbyists - Men who loved and appreciated bikes, owned one, but were just regular guys.
The Hobbyists didn't try to look like they belonged to an M.C. In fact, they took great pains in appearing to NOT look M.C. They wore their everyday clothing and kept regular haircuts, etc. These riders did not want to be mistaken for members.
Rice Grinders, or owners of a metric bike, were of no threat or consequence to the members. They were most often kids who had their dirt bike licensed for the street. Members knew that these riders just enjoyed riding and they barely gave a metric rider a glance. My Dad would tease these riders, dropping a handful of rice under their bike from his jacket pocket, leaning over and saying, "Hey, your bike is leaking." Secretly some of the members, including my Dad, admired these riders, mostly for their skill. My Dad often shared with me how much he enjoyed watching them ride.
Wanna Be's were in a dangerous category. Riders who didn't identify with a club but posed as they belonged to one were asking for an ass-beating, if not worse. Many didn't realize the dangers until it was too late. My personal philosophy is BE YOU. Boldly Embrace Your Own Uniqueness. Posing goes against that philosophy in every way. Posing as a member of an M.C., or worse, a lone rider, just taunts these members into proving their prowess within the territory. Like a naked man covered in blood running through a pride of lions, a Wanna Be strutting into a bar during the mid-1970's riding a Harley, wearing a jacket with patches (God Forbid a 3-piece patch) without actually belonging to a club, was certain death.
Netflix doesn't seem to realize these are real people, with real loyalty issues and living in real social settings. "Let's all wear cool patches and be in a motorcycle gang" is an insane statement! Given the right set, or should I say wrong set, of circumstances, anyone taking this as a serious remark, or even considering this idea, is truly The Walking Dead. There are rules, albeit unwritten rules, for starting an M.C., which must be followed. There are also clear differences between riding clubs and motorcycle clubs that anyone wishing to join a club should consider.
One night when I was 5 year old, my Dad's closest friend, Dangerous Dan, came in our front door. He was so close to our family he didn't knock, he always just walked in. I have home movies of our family from 1969 and Dan is in them. This night Dan came in late, and he looked like he had black dirt on his clothes and arms. It turned out he had knifed a man, in a bar, who was wearing a "cut" (vest with patches) that didn't actually belong to the club. His patches weren't from their M.C., but it didn't matter. He was posing. My father sat me in his recliner and took Dan's clothes and burned them in the backyard in our BBQ grill. Dan showered and my Dad rounded up some other clothes for him. The three of us were the only ones at home that night, but I wasn't afraid of being harmed. In fact, I felt very safe with these two men, because I was on their side.
I wouldn't want to be on the other side of Dangerous Dan's knife that night, or any other night.

Posers often say that they are free to do what they want, wear what they want, say what they want. And it's all true. But you also have to back it up when a 1%er confronts you about it. It was the 1%ers who created the image of the guys wearing leather, pendleton shirts, patches, bandanas, and tattoos. But they also paid the price in death and prison time for this reputation. Posers are people who want to be feared in this way, but don't want to pay the price.
ReplyDeleteThese guys are so incredibly tough, they need legions of backup.
Deleteso If I have a vest, for protection, and put like a few random patches like a football team, hockey, team, the flag, a slice of pizza, a cheeseburger, a naked chick, you know, my name things near and dear to me, nothing in the center of the back but maybe eventually 30-40 random things, is someone gonna have a problem with that? I would think it's pretty obvious I'm not making any sort of threatening statement.
DeleteNo, nobody is going to have a problem with that. The "patches" referred to here are not what you are talking about. The problem arises when someone starts pretending to be in an MC. In my limited experience MC's generally use a 3 piece. The top rocker identifies the name of the Club. The bottom rocker identifies their "territory". The 3rd piece is their emblem in the middle of the two rockers. Generally to the right somewhere is a "MC" patch identifying that this organization is an actual MC. It's pretty damn hard to appear that you are in a MC without doing so intentionally.

DeleteHmmm let's see I'm independent I have a 3 piece cutte top rocker lone wolf bottom rocker California and middle patch of wolf. That mean I'm marked? Bc I've never had a problem with any mc or rc
DeleteIt doesn't mean you're marked friend. The fact that you're not in an MC and call your vest a "cutte" will definitely warrant a discussion if you say it around an MC, a more specifically, one of the old 1% MCs. A "cutte" is EARNED through prospecting. Anything else is merely a vest with patches.
Deletethere is an actual MC called the lone wolf. If you are set in keeping this on your vest there is single patch that says lone wolf with a picture of a wolf on it. If you don't like that I highly recommend that you remove the bottom rocker as it saying that you claim California as your territory and MC's are very territorial
DeleteWhat's wrong with a lone rider?
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with being a lone rider, unless you're posing as a one-man-club. Posing, in general, is a horrible idea. Being an individual rider is fine and no one would find that as an issue in regards to this topic. I hope I've cleared up my meaning. I'm having difficulty putting into words what I mean by Lone Rider. . . .
DeleteNothing wrong with being a lone rider. The point of the article is that Netflix is putting an advert on Facebook telling people to put on patches and pretend that we are in an MC, purely for their own profit. There's enough people out there who worship Sons of Anarchy, that they'll actually do it.
DeleteI agree, putting on vests, leather and belonging or acting as if you belong to a diehard motorcycle club could lead to not so nice things.
DeleteI love SOA, I even have a t-shirt, but after watching season 4 I have begun to be afraid of MCs like that. I have started to look for 1 or 2 buddies to ride with or a MC riding club (no leather, patches, etc.) to do daily/ weekend rides.
Not until this article did I realize what a dangerous message Netflix was putting out. Thanks for the info, I'll spread the word.
You can't wear leathers or a vest now? Really? I never knew anyone had the right tell me or anyone else what to wear. Granted, wearing clothing that says you belong to some MC is just stupid and something I'd never do.
DeleteI have a leather vest with a Harley Davidson rocker on it. I also have one that says helmet laws suck. One that says Crazy Bastard cause that's what I've been called since I was a kid.One that says ride it like you stole it & One more that says FTW does that make me a target for 1%ers cause I've been around a lot of them & they were cool cause I mind my own business. What do you think?
DeleteI agree, putting on vests, wearing leather and being apart of a diehard motorcycle club could lead to very bad things. I love SOA, I even have a SOA t-shirt , but watching the 4th season has made me very afraid of motorcycle clubs/ members with vests, patches, etc. I'm now looking into finding 1 or 2 buddies to ride with or a motorcycle riding group- no vests, patches, etc. just daily/weekend rides.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a member, but what of the Harley Owners Group?
ReplyDeleteWhat here do they fit in... RUBS?
Keep in mind, the time I'm referring to was from the mid-60's to mid-70's in California. I certainly don't speak for club members, nor do I know what things are like now. My point is that this mentality still exists and why would anyone poke a tiger? I don't know how members view HOG members. But to my understanding, HOG is a riding club, not an MC and there's a huge difference.
DeleteI'm a HOG member and I'm certainly not rich :-) however, I enjoy riding and socializing with like minded people. HOG is definitely not a MC and the organization stresses that point at every opportunity. The purpose of HOG is to ride and have fun and we do just that. I respect riders who are part of a MC and their culture and have never had any issues with someone in a MC. ~Curt
DeleteHAHAHA SOA...what a crock of shitbags and posseurs! Holly weird sucks lil soft eggs. FTNWO Throw the TV set away and ride like your life depends on it people.
ReplyDeletejust incase you didn't know their are 4 Hells Angels that are on sons so I'm sure Kurt Sutter knew what he was doing and asked some of the Angels what they thought David Labrea even wrote some of the shows but people need to remember its just a tv show like all tv shows
DeleteWearing a SOA shirt is stupid. I started riding in 1965 and back then as for clothes there were no set stiles. I remember 1%'s wearing plaid bell bottoms and white T-shirts. It was the late 60's or early 70's black started to become well black. When in a bar or any other setting I respect and should be respected.
ReplyDeleteGood article. I grew up in southern california(San Diego) and I only saw the 81 and was facinated by it as a kid. Now that I live in the pacific northwest I only see Bandidos and their affiliates and the occasional 81. It is no joke. A friend of mine had a patch on his vest that said red and gold and he got confronted by another club which needless to say he went home and took that patch off. Unless you are ready to defend and put your life on it I don't suggest any patches that connect you to any mc especially outlaw.

ReplyDeleteI'm a BAMBI and proud of it...rode an old Ironhead and then there was a lull. So what. I'm back now and I am a lone rider..not even close to a poser. What's the issue with a lone rider who hangs around clubs, runs, bbq's etc??
DeleteI'm curious. Used to ride and want to get back in the worst way...call me a Bambi. Basically a lone rider and want to know how they're viewed as well as the levels and rituals of mutual respect. I sometimes might go to MC functions,runs,bbqs,etc..even just to hang out at the club open bar things...is this cool?
DeleteAs an average rider and a big supporter of the 2nd amendment, would it be ok to put 2nd amendment patches on a vest? Or does that still make me look bad?
ReplyDeleteTony,
DeleteI just don't know. But I've published your comment so perhaps a reader can answer.
Thanks!
DeleteI can not express this enough, DO NOT make it appear close to or the same as an m/c or r/c patch. R/cs also ride as support clubs for m/cs. but you should be fine.
DeleteIf you just form an R/C of brother's and sisters is that okay ? Like their not affiliated wih any club. Is that okay ?
DeleteWhy would anybody want to wear all that if when they do they are going to be targets for cops, and or anybody that might have an issue with them, a patch is just a target, how long is it going to be before people start getting picked off their bikes from an expressway bridge? In fact, now days this country is not as free as it once was, why would any club want to advertise who they are, everybody knows who they are, they do not need to have a patch on for people to know who is in what area.
DeleteVery interesting.
ReplyDeleteI was considering getting a 1%er patch for a non leather jacket. For the anti establishment sentiment, that and it looks cool. I live in England in a town where MCs are virtually non existent as far as I know. Even then is wearing a 1%er patch ok?
I wouldn't like to get attacked over an image... and I'd only have to come across one guy who takes it the wrong way. Please advise!
My advice is don't do it Man! Wow! You just never know who you'll run across. Don't risk it, on anything. It doesn't matter if it's leather. Those patches must be EARNED!
DeleteHope you consider this more carefully and I really hope this helped.
Hmm, yes. I thought you might say something along those lines.
DeleteWell, in the interest of personal safety, I'll leave any MC related patches alone.
Thanks for the swift reply. :)
And to Midnight Walker, if you want to wear a piece of cloth that says 1% on it then do it! Its a piece of fabric with thread on it... Thats it. Its not like your wearing a US Army ranger tab or special forces tab, or in your case SAS and never earned it.
DeleteAnson, certainly MidnightWesker23 has the option to wear that patch, but don't you think it's rather reckless of you to encourage him to risk his life by doing so? And what makes wearing a US Army Ranger tab or special forces tab different. Please tell me. What would happen if he wore that?
DeleteBecause I think I pretty clearly stated what I know has happened to people who wear 1% patches who are not actually in a club. And I have been told by current club members from various clubs that this would still happen to someone posing.
So, seriously, wear it at your own risk!
Well I'm a new rider just enjoy the cruise.. I got an Indian, like harleys too..I would never wearr shit that I didn't earn. I'm south side Chicago guy..I know bout gangs and the danger acting like you in that life I've seen it..so if these MC 's are anything like what I think they are don't push your luck being a Billy badass...posers will get their shit crushed... Smoke Ride and Live..
DeleteWell I'm a new rider just enjoy the cruise.. I got an Indian, like harleys too..I would never wearr shit that I didn't earn. DeleteWell we don't have any 1%on our patch but we do have a single patch witch is called kinfolks riderz unlimited we r all family and we have ran in to a few local clubs In Indianapolis and had not one problem I think k it is how u carry ur self
DeleteHow does riding a "metric" bike make you not a rider? I can't seem to remember a Harley bike or its rider, winning any motocross, supercross, or enduro championships. Not to mention a moto gp race. Or even a drag race for that matter. I have never rode a Harley and have no plans on ever riding one, number one because of the "I'm better than everyone else because I said so" attitude, that comes with it. I'm often asked by people at bike shows, "when are you getting a Harley", and my response is always the same..... When Harley makes a reliable bike, that can go 10k 20k or even 50k miles without needing major parts or a rebuild, and when they make a bike that can carve streets as well as it can go through the woods, and have a decent power to weight ratio.... Then I'd consider getting a Harley. And still probably not from the arrogance and cockiness that comes with owning one. Such as the, I just bought a Harley and suddenly I'm a real biker, cockiness. Sure if you've been riding for 20+ years maybe I'll listen to what you have to say about Harley's. I guess where I'm getting at is that owning a certain type of bike or dressing a certain way does not make you a biker. But you know what does? Riding your damn bike!
ReplyDeleteThere is a huge difference between a rider and a club member.
DeleteYou can be both. Like me. I've ridden for 37 years, 34 of them solo. I joined a motorcycle riding club 3 years ago
DeleteYou can be both like me. I ride and belong to a mc club. What do you say to that Sash?
DeleteYou can be both. Like me. I've ridden for 37 years, 34 of them solo. I joined a motorcycle riding club 3 years ago
DeleteI really like your response and respect your feeling about bikes.I'm a fairly new rider' I've always been the "bitch on the back".I rode my brothers dirt bikes when I was younger and really respect true metric riders. It takes a tremendous amount of skill to ride the why you do. However,I am a Harley owner, not because I'm better than anyone else or have an attitude (well I may have an attitude because I'm a female) and all the women who read this know what I'm talking about. I bought a Harley because I love their bikes, the distinct sound. I bought a Harley because that is the way I choose to enjoy my ride.I will also stress that I know your asking for issues that you don't want by putting patches on your vest. I live in FL where there are many MC's, it is common knowledge among bikers just show respect to all bikers especially 1%.
DeleteAlso I'd like to add that Ive never felt the need to stab anyone because I'm wearing a Fox jersey and someone else is wearing a Thor or Troy Lee Designs one. Imho, riding is riding, you ride or you are a cager there's not much else in between unless of course you own a helicopter, then hats off to you!
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell is a one man club? And why is that a problem? I know churches that have riding groups, jackets and all , organized rides the 9 yards. Are church goers in danger of attack? Why couldn't a person or group of people where like unclaimed colors and/or patches and ride out somewhere together? Essentially these MCs are Gangs that's what I'm hearing... you aren't in our club you're repping something that could be a rival or threat so I kill you. I have to wear my regular clothes when I ride to be safe because putting on a vest decorated with things I like marks me as a poser that needs to be dealt with?
ReplyDeleteBilly, there is a huge difference between "riding clubs" and "motorcycle clubs" in the world of motorcycling. There is another huge difference between "motorcycle clubs" and "1% motorcycle clubs" too. An example would be a BACA, Bikers Against Child Abuse. This is considered a motorcycle club, but it is clear to everyone, MC's and 1% MC's, that this is not a 1% club.
DeleteThe warning is for anyone posing as a 1%er. It is important for anyone who dons a vest or jacket with patches to know the differences and deal with the clubs in their area. Ask questions first! Don't just say, "What the Hell!" and throw on a vest with patches.
MidnightWesker23 asked in the comments above, "I was considering getting a 1%er patch for a non leather jacket. For the anti establishment sentiment, that and it looks cool. I live in England in a town where MCs are virtually non existent as far as I know. Even then is wearing a 1%er patch ok?"
Most of us replying are warning this individual against doing such a dangerous thing.
Also, there are "motorcycle organizations" which are NOT clubs at all. HOG, or Harley Owners Group, is a good example.
Just because people are wearing vests with patches, don't assume they are an MC.
Lastly, there are no references to "gangs" in this context. If that is what you want to refer to these club members as, you may be asking for trouble.
Thanks for your comment and for opening up some great topics!
Listen to what she is saying. There are motorcycle riding clubs(RC) such as HOGS, Legion Riders, and Christen Riders Association, etc. that have patches they have bought or were given. They can wear these patches in accordance with the rules of the RC. There are riding clubs that are in between and respected by RC and MC such as the 501c3 BACA the follows MC protocols. Then there are Motorcycle Clubs (MC) and 1%ers, which SOA were pretending to be. In the MC world to wear a patch (of that club) you must earn it with loyalty to the club and patch. You must know the rules and protocols of the club. If someone is caught wearing a patch from a club that was not earned with loyalty, or wearing a patch similar to that patch, they have placed themselves in danger. Patches (such as "ride it like you stole it" or the American Flag, etc.) on a vest will not necessarily get you harmed. It is the type of patches (such as a three piece rocker) and placements of patches that could be dangerous. What I am hearing is DON'T assume anything. Do your homework and ask questions of other bikers. Educate yourself before donning a vest/cut and never pretend you are something you're not.
DeleteNever try to be someone you're not. These bikers who are into that life don't play. They are really about their biker family . That loyalitylb. you bleed I bleed I eat you eat.if you fight I fight they die... til the end we are family that's some real stuff that fakes will never understand.. if you get locked up for whatever if it for the club / family it's worth it..the riders who are like me j uh St cruising should know how to be safe and what to do and not to do when riding . Just be informed be safe know where youre at meaning who's rode you on in that area and you should be fine..
ReplyDeleteTheres also a funny thing called the law. This aint the wild west. Take a swing at someone, or even just make a terroistic threat and ya go to jail. Ya, Modern Times.
DeleteWow! Good article.
ReplyDeleteharley starter drives
For those of you that have never went down on your bike, wear leather. Don't be afraid of wearing leather. it will save your skin. Literally. I've been down. I lived it. I just wanted to clarify this. Like the article and comments said: If you don't want shit from 1%'er clubs then you need to be yourself, only wear patches and shit that are no club affiliated UNLESS you're part of a club that has gotten the green light from the dominant 1%'er club and don't lie or fake shit. They can tell. These are men of conviction in most cases. They are being real with you and they expect it back. Ride. Wear leather. Have fun. Show your pride and intrests or whatever in your patches. Just make damn sure you know the rules. Like she said, unwritten but they are there. it's up to you to seek out in the rules to riding. I live in the same county as the founding chapter of the biggest and baddest MC there is. They run this state and in particular this area. NO clubs form without approval from them. Family or otherwise. Just be smart. Be yourself. And don't fake it.
ReplyDeleteAs far as patches go, if I were to put a 3 piece military patch on, example being top rocker branch of service, middle patch logo and bottom rocker saying "veteran", would that be looked down upon by MC's? I know I've read on a few threads about 3 pieces being a no no. Does this just apply to people trying to act like an MC member, or is that for anyone?
ReplyDeleteTo my understanding, wearing a 3-piece patch is a violation of the 1%'er code. Even the support groups might take issue with that. The rocker alone will get you into some serious trouble. I would suggest you steer clear of any 3-piece patch, military, religious, organized group, etc.
DeleteCertainly consult the reigning MC in your area to ask more.
As an 81 Nomad I challenge you to exercise your "right" to do wtf you want. Shit will end up getting you gutted brother
ReplyDeleteCan I wear a single patch say like "Nomad"... No other patch... How would this be viewed?
ReplyDeleteI don't really know. Check with your local clubs.
DeleteI built my first bike. I built my second bike. The tool bag on my Harley isn't for show. I rode independent my whole life and grew up around Red and White in New Jersey.
ReplyDeleteI never had a problem anywhere because the patches i fly are a true expression of me and where I've been. I own a bagger with 116,000 + miles on her. I'm not a rider, an enthusiast or a rub.
I am a veteran and am fucking proud of it. I don't fuck with people and i don't get fucked with. When i was down, no one rode with me. I ride with no one.
Mike Traupman.
I completely respect that Mike.
DeleteDid you ever wear a 3-piece patch of the Red and White without being in the club?
Respect
DeleteI say wear what you want ride how you want and handle buisnes when you have to. If someone wants to say you are disrespecting them and wants to hurt you for it then in self defense end their ass. The beauty is if they are in a 1%er group the courts wont give 2 rats if some guys go to beat a guy in a parking lot and he guns their asses down. The days of intimidating bikers just cause you the 1% "oh so scary" dont think they make the cut are coming to an end. Im a 99%er and a really nice guy 99% of the time more than happy to help my fellow man and no interest in having beef with anyone or in joining a club. If you dont like my cut then dont look or poke fun and laugh about it to your friends I wont care nothing says we gotta be friends or even friendly but dont try to say I have to give them to you or take them off cause that will just end badly for you.
ReplyDeleteI must say, some of these replies are truly cracking me up. Liiiiiike. You really just don't understand. SoA was fake as shit. With respect to the 1%ers who were on there (I knew there was something special about Happy -David LaBreava- from the get go) but here's what you "I'll do what I want" people have to realize.. SOA was a poor fake depiction of shit that's realllllyyyy real. I've seen our local club perk up at the sight of someone patched out. They watch for the disrespect and I'm positive that they will absolutely follow through. Sooo like you just go right on ahead with ya bad self. Arrogance won't get you far, but respect will at least keep you out of the ambulance.
DeleteI say wear what you want ride how you want and handle buisness as you have to if someone is willing to kill me for my cut thats fine cause Im willing to kill to keep it. Let the best man win.
ReplyDeleteTo all of you who say, "I'll wear what I want. I'll kill someone who comes after me, etc.," I don't understand that thinking. You're willing to KILL ANOTHER HUMAN BEING to wear a piece of clothing? And you're willing to put not only your life at risk, but a stranger's and your family's lives too? Do you really think you can "end his ass" and not feel the retribution of a 1%'er?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I am shocked. You obviously have no clue what kind of trouble you're asking for is that's your attitude.
More power to ya. . . You're gonna need it.
No. I am willing to risk my life to defend my right as an American to wear what the fuck I want to wear. Period!
DeleteListen to her. I currently ride with an MC in Birmingham, AL. She has not lied to you yet. Wear what you want, but do understand that "every action has a equal and opposite reaction." You may "end his ass" but that will ultimately be the "end of your ass." No one person is more bad ass than the next, but ass a grown man, you should know that no one tolerates disrespect. If you are saying "what you'll do" just across the keyboard, fine.....lame...but fine. Doing it, we'll just plain stupid. If you won't stick your hand on a hot stove everyday, no need to "wear what you want" either. To each his own though. In the immortal words of Forrest Gump "stupid is as stupid does.....lmfao...@Anson Meyer...smh.
ReplyDeleteTo settle some of the confusion, I'll give you a couple of sources that will tell you how things work in the MC world of today...
ReplyDeletehttp://www.lifestylerider.com/html/body_outlaw_clubs_101.html
http://lifestylerider.com/html/body_m_c_basics.html
There's a wealth of info there, and before you put any patch on your clothing, or attempt to interact with outlaw MC's, I would suggest reading it thoroughly. Ride whatever you want, be wherever you like...but when you begin adopting the mores of Outlaw/1% culture, it would serve you well to know exactly what you're doing. The ass you save may be your own.
I also grew up near local clubs and had some family members and family friends in said clubs. I fully support what they do. I even aspire to ride as they did in my own way on my own Harley. But this Netflix add is god damn dumb. First off referring to a club as a "gang" warrants an ass kicking. Second, you don't do something because someone else does. You walk your own path. Even in an club each member will be unique. Even cuts are unique. They all carry the same rockers sure, but the titles, the badges, the personal additions.. the style of leather they want it on, vest, jacket, half sleeve.. there's so many variations of people and styles they rock that it's stupid as hell to imply that you can be just like them just by throwing on some leather and patches you never earned. It's stupid as hell to tell everyone to do it. Some people are doctors. Some lawyers. Some police. Some 99%ers. Some 1%ers. We all have our own jobs and we all need to stick to them. Last thing I have to say is.. "Do as you say.. or shut the hell up."
ReplyDeleteJust wondering, would I catch flak for wearing an air force vest, no patches other than the back no Mc related anything on it.....just wondering
ReplyDeleteI would doubt it. It should not be a problem.
DeleteI'm a HOG life member and I wear a leather vest. On my vest I have the HOG patches and rockers. But My passion is riding thousands of miles around the world solo and I'm considering an independent or lone biker patch on my vest. My vest is a history of what I've achieved as a biker. It tells my story. If I didn't do it, if I didn't earn it; it's not going on my vest.
ReplyDeleteSo how will I be categorized???
As you well know, HOG is Harley Owners Group, which is just an Owners Group. You'll only be seen as a member of an owners group, nothing more.
DeleteTo my understanding, the HOG patches are a 2-piece patch riding group. There are great distinctions between 1-piece, 2-piece and 3-piece patches, as well as owners groups, riding groups, riding clubs and motorcycle clubs.
For the record, I do not claim to be an authority on all of the nuances and rules of wearing a cut with patches. I know what NOT to do, which goes far beyond just wearing the wrong patch(es).
I have written much more about my life with my father and other 1%'ers in my book Rude Biker Chick, Lessons From My Daddy. www.RudeBikerChick.com
Anyone that is asking questions on here should listen to her she knows what she is talking about. DeleteLearn English. Its take it seriously, not "serious". Also we have laws. We can wear what we want. Take a swing at someone and go to jail. Grow up
DeleteStolen Valor is a mistake, and it will land you in trouble with many. Ride have fun, but don't be a poser by pretending to be anything but what you are.
ReplyDeleteI wear a three piece all red white n blue..and I ride jap cruser...and I have 1%er tattooed on my hand in plain view...I also served 17 years in prison and although Im a decent guy...I can also back up doing whatever the fuck I want..either by being respectful.. Giving a beating or taking one..
ReplyDeleteIf you're so brave, then why the fake profile? Why not put your name on your comment?
DeleteAnd I am HIGHLY OFFENDED by the phrase "Jap". (I won't even tackle the misspelling of cruiser and a few other words.) My husband is Japanese, so if you want to say you ride a Japanese bike, that's fine, but the word "Jap" is an incredibly offensive term.
The next time you want to bravely state your point of view on MY site, be a "decent guy" and "back up doing whatever the fuck you want" and put your name on it.
Ok in a similar vein I have a couple of patches I would like to wear, I did earn them but not as a biker as a soldier one is the cap badge of my regiment (8x9" worn on back as a single piece no rockers)and one smaller one is my medal ribbon(worn on the front left of chest, normal placement for awards) would this create any friction between myself and any mc members. REspect
ReplyDeleteThis all seems crazy, why would an outlaw MC with real history and provienece bother getting offended by a "poser"? Isn't imitation the highest form of flattery? OK if the poser does steal their exact patch a slap could be in order if they stray in to the wrong bar but really in this day and age where selfies are currency surely belonging is more important than appearance?
ReplyDeleteIt's about respect. They EARNED their patches and cuts. If you wear rockers you haven't earned, it's incredibly disrespectful. You might as well spit in their face.
DeleteBecause those outlaws watched their brothers die, get blown off bikes and deal with cops while some dumb ass dentist does it for a weekend.
DeleteI want to start a motorcycle riding group through a facebook group page. We will wear no patches or assume to be 1%er's. Is that a violation of MC's or RC's? Just looking to make new friends and ride our motorcycles, both imports and domestic.
ReplyDeleteOK so my vest has a plain cross on my back. No other patches. How would this be interpreted?
ReplyDeleteSo my husband and I are not riders, we live in the pnw- the local mc is the free souls. I own a small business, we are a family and we use patches for hats etc. my husband thought it would be great to make me a vest, anyways- he went big and did a three piece rocker with our logo on the back, and title patches on the front. It's a great vest and I'm proud of my business. But someone mentioned I should look into Hingis before wearing it around. It absolutely isn't meant to disrespect anyone- what's the rules for something like this that's not affiliated with the motorcycling world? Thanks in advance!
ReplyDeleteI got a vest as a gift. I'm the president of a small business, and the vest has patches and a three piece rocker on the back with our logo in the middle. This is absolutely not meant as disrespectful, as it is not affiliated with any motorcycle activities of any kind- I'm not a rider myself. Is this something I shouldn't wear because of the rockers? Thanks in advance!
ReplyDeleteI am a Proud Christian and have a vest with a rocker that says "Christian Biker". A large cross underneath that and a large patch under the cross that reads "Never ride faster than your angel can fly" with a few other christian small patches below all that. I have a patch on my chest that says 100% for Jesus and an American flag on one side with the state flag and favorite sports team from my state on the other side is something like this a serious issue?
ReplyDeleteI wear my vest for protection while riding. I'm no club guy at all. Nothing against them but just not my thing. I have a metric cruiser that I love to ride on beautiful days and simply wanted to put the patches on my vest that expresses what I love the most.
I'm in mid America spend no time at bars, ralleys, etc. Just ride with friends.
Is this an insult to MC's? Should I get a new vest or is this acceptable?
Find answers you have by googling your States COC if you have one. Don't rely on the words you read on a blog. I will say that wearing a SOA t-shirt will get you laughed at.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this info Bay Area Outlaw! I consistently ask people to follow up with their local clubs.
DeleteI don't want anyone to get hurt out of ignorance (which means "not knowing the facts". It does not mean "stupid".
To Everyone:
ReplyDeleteWearing lots of little patches, religious patches, HOG clubs patches, etc, are by and large harmless. The best rule of thumb is "POSERS are those in danger."

Thank you! HA and black & white and any dominant club knows what the Harley Owners Group patch looks like. MC life is very serious but 1%ers aren't gonna put themselves on the radar for stabbing a guy that has a big cross and a Jesus Rocks patch on his back.
Deletehi, i love harley and i just bought my first one so i can ride and just enjoy it. I dont belong to any clubs or ride with people. usually its just me and on occasions my wife. i have a vest with no patches and a leather jacket that i plan to wear for obvious safety reasons. now, what kind of patches can i add without being mistaken for something that i am not? so far i have my HOG owners group patch and wanthed the harley eagle on the back of my vest. Also i usually ride alone but dont want to seem like a lone rider. any tips?
ReplyDeleteLot of nonsense in this article. Please.. leather and tattoos were trademarked by 1%rs? What a joke. I see a lot of fanboi(girl?) in here... Leaking metrics? What? That's a Harley thing, and is the joke of every one of us not over-paying for a name.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the middle ground, I've had cruisers, ss sports bikes, and everything in between. I dress, and act, how I want, and couldn't give two shits what some uppity wannabe (OP I'm guessing) says. One of my best friends is married to the local HA prez, and while I get shit for riding a honda (I give him shit for the oil spots he leaves everywhere) it's in jest. All the club riders I've met don't give a fuck, unless you go out of your way to pretend to be something you're not. My cb750 is chopped and stripped, a blend of streetfighter and bobber. I ride with a leather vest, military patches, and Us Army/Veteran rockers, and a Ka-bar strapped to my side. Guess I'm a poser right? Please...
ps, you harley girls look cute... for the few seconds I can still see you in my mirror ;p 3rd gear wheelies make it hard to see you for longer than that.
Since I was born in 1965 and this article refers to the late 60's - mid 70's, I can see why you don't have a Fucking clue Junior.
ReplyDeleteI don't ride nor have I ever ridden a Harley.
I'm sure you think you're pretty badass on your CB750 since you went to great lengths to describe it. But sadly you've impressed no one with your ability to read and comprehend content because you don't know what the He'll you're talking about.

Is it OK to wear a small dilligaf patch on my vest? Also top and bottom rockers that said US ARMY (TOP) and combat veteran (Bottom) on my back. The middle patch will be a skull that has a skeleton with a beret that says USARMY. PLease advise and I thank you in advance.
ReplyDeleteYou are all being silly. You can wear the unearned patches. Wear the cross, the eagle, etc. Just don't make up a patch and act like a club. M.C. members are not stupid. They know what different patches are. Also, to the people who are keyboard warriors....just relax, no need to be Billy bad ass. To those stating what club you are in, um ya right, club members don't need to brag online. For the casual rider, RC, MM member, do your thing and have fun, just don't get into others business and show respect. She is talking about these yeehaws, who are running around with CLUB patches and acting all Billy Badass. Ya know what else is shitty. When non-club members avoid a patched member like the plague. Remember they are people too, you can talk to them, you can say "hi" and have a conversation. They are not gonna bite you, unless you are a douchebag and really cross a line. Remember kids, club members do not want bad attention. Just be normal and ride for the sake of riding.
ReplyDeleteDO NOT WEAR ANY OFFICIAL PATCHES OR ROCKERS UNLESS YOU ARE KNOWN AND RESPECTED. Now, say you just bought a bike. Your so cool, you even bought a cut. Then you watched SOA and bought some patches. Now, while you MIGHT, MIGHT. Not get a beating ( depending on your local clubs) you will give REAL riders a decent laugh. Now if you happen to ride though HA territory wearing a Cali bottom rocker, that's one thing. You will not get killed over wearing an SOA cut, however if you are not ready to deal with an entire club, I wouldn't disrespect any member of a real mc. That's just my 2 cents, from a real rider
ReplyDeleteI have a few patches on my vest, including one on the back (single, not a 3-piece). All my patches are Harry Potter related because that's what I'm into! I make it a point to never put on patches that even remotely resemble MC patches!!
ReplyDeleteThere are Harry Potter patches?
DeleteAny advice for a woman who has heard all the stories and accepts that it's rough who wants to be with her man who's a recent join, but has always been willing to lay down her life (if neccessary) for anyone her man calls family (includes club's, creeds, blood, anyone labeled family)?
ReplyDeleteI find all this somewhat amusing. Motorcycles are just a means of transportation in south east asian countries, and everyone rides from early teenage. You drive a car for fun. Here it is the other way round, everyone drives a car from teenage, its just transportation, and riding motorcycles is a hobby.

ReplyDeleteSo what would you think about my situation? I have a leather vest that has a vintage patch that came off of an old motorcycle vest. That's in the center of the back & I have a top rocker that says "Harley - Davidson" & a bottom one that says "H-DMC"....Harley-Davidson Motor Co. What about that? I'm not trying to pose as an MC member at all, I just love Harleys. And Harley has a whole clothesline that is "H-DMC". I don't have a "MC" square to the right or anything. What's your opinion about that? Just curious.

I would assume that since most MC's have Harleys, they'd know that "H-DMC" wouldn't stand for "Motorcycle Club", but now I wonder. Harley even has a whole clothing line that's H-DMC. What do you think? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteI'm an artist in a collective and some members want a top rocker that has our collective name in it. If the name is unrelated to any club, and we don't have a bottom rocker showing territory, is this patch still a problem? Thank you for having this conversation going, it's really interesting.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: I see guys and girls that belong to the volunteer Star Wars costuming group The 501st Legion wearing 3 patch rockers on cuts, jackets, Dickies shirts, etc. These people do nothing but charity work and dress and movie characters. Are they at risk for wearing 3 patch sets when their's feature Darth Vader and Stormtroopers? I also see this kind of club stuff at Disneyland (Nightmare Before Christmas for example). Thoughts?

ReplyDeleteI have a denim cut with just the uk flag on the left chest i've been riding with it a few weeks now, no patches on my back, i am asking if this is seen as posing... i just like it as it's something i wanted to incorporate as my own style whilst i ride
ReplyDeleteIn my experience , if you do not mess with a 1% club and mind your own buisiness they won't mess with you. They can't be bothered to kick your ass for wearing a patch when you're in public somewhere. If you waltz into their club or bar being a poser than you deserve what's coming. Also if you have no bottom rocker why would they give a shit anyways? If that were the case they have a big problem with punks / metal-heads and other social clubs who wear back patches.
ReplyDeleteAll this yadda yadda ive been around bikes my whole life
ReplyDeletePatch doesnt make the man man makes the patch
1%ers actually have jobs family responsability etc they dont go out saying im going to fuck up a civilians day
They mind their own business
They give respect
They believe in loyaty brotherhood and you gotta put in the work to get the patch
A real brother couldnt care the less about if he gets his patch or not it doesnt define him its himself that defines him and his loyaty and respect that represents him
If your just allowed to hang around thats a big compliment tough guys rude guys disrespectfull or selfish or junkys dont last long
Ive never road in a club because i didnt have the time so why waste theirs
I do have the time now and I am ready
"tough guys rude guys disrespectfull or selfish or junkys dont last long"
DeleteWhat fucking clubs you been around? Cop clubs and church clubs?
as far as im concerned, its bullshit school yard mentality. Fk them, if i want to wear a three piece patch and have my own club, who is anyone to tell me no, kiss my royal reaper ass..big boys on the block..really, how do you know that maybe, just maybe the new kid on the block isnt the one to fear most...keep it real prison yard apes
ReplyDeleteI dunno, ask the guys in metro Detroit who took your attitude who were shocked that their wannabe club house got bombed.
DeleteFunny how when the threat of possibly dying in a fire came.about these same guys changed their attitude.
Are side rockers a no-no as well? Just out of curiosity. Assumed they were so never sewed mine on it sits in my draw. A friend passed away and I cut it from her cut as was the wish, I do wear a cut but its blank. I ain't in a club so why pretend or advertise that lol doesn't mean I can't take nor give a beating..niether does wearing patches say that.
ReplyDeleteIf side rockers are okay I'd only wear it for her tbh if not..not an issue
Too many people taking a piece of leather and cloth too seriously. Going to bars thinking what you wear makes anyone think your hot sh*t is something women do.
ReplyDeleteToo many people taking a piece of leather and cloth too seriously. Going out, making as much noise as possible and dressing up to get attention is for 16 year old girls. I'll take the loner with a patch over a bunch of wannabe bondage club rejects any day.
ReplyDeleteAll of this is rather silly. Who gives a fuck what you wear from a TV show? As long as you don't make your own 1% vest and pose as something you're not you're okay.
ReplyDeleteIf the vest doesn't resemble an outlaw vest you're good. I think that's the rule of thumb. We know the difference between fiction and nonfiction .
What if you have a rocker style setup but it's just for your family? For example if you had a back patch you like that doesn't belong to any known M.C. with your last name on the top rocker and the word "gang" on the bottom. No territory marked. Would this be insulting to them? It's not a club but just three generations riding together.
ReplyDeleteHi I'm reading this and I just want to make sure you see I haven't been riding for that long and I'm a Christian my father had this vest that had a patch which says Jesus forever with a cross on the back along with the Christian fish and a patch that says Christians aren't perfect just forgiven on the front is that ok to wear recently I just been wearing a black denim vest
ReplyDeleteHow do the 1% clubs in Kentucky put up with those posing as some sort of good guys I luv Jesus MC club, when they are stomping on the same ground and making money where they don't belong? One club is getting pretty big and making plenty of money right under their noses.. staying under the radars saying they are only a racing and chopper builder. I hate phonies.
ReplyDeleteInteresting but also scary.
ReplyDeleteMC rules are GAF. Why should a grown man have to ask someone to do anything? Retarded. Bunch of losers. My friends and I will ride our biks, wear what we want, call it what we want, and do whatever else we want. I'm not asking anyone for anything. Don't like it, then leave me alone, I won't bother you. If I want to wear patches, screw off. If so want to ride in my underwear it's none of your business. You don't own the street your club house is on, I ride where I want. If you want to join my Club/Gang (or whatever I feel like calling it) I'm not going to make you "prospect" like some high school kid crap. Just come hang out and ride, if we like each other, you're in, and we can help each other out with stuff. Don't want to ride with us anymore, cool, see yah around. We are not here to bother anyone, just do our own thing, so just leave us alone and there will be no problems. What I do is none of your business. Quit acting like a bunch of kids. We drink where we want to drink, we ride where we want to ride, we wear what we want to wear. Our only rule is don't be an idiot. If you have something to say to me, to us, come say it. If you threaten me, I will hurt you. If I want to start 15 clubs in your city, I'll do it, I won't ask, because it has nothing to do with you. If someone has two wheels and a motor and isn't an idiot, they are welcome to ride with us, end of story. All these clubs with bylaws and rules, bowing down to others because they "respect" them, only because they are bullies, those are the real posers, losers, wusses. The argument that a club is like a military force, fire department, or whatever is absolute nonsense. You are not enforcing laws, you are not elected by the people, given the authority to save lives, to put out fires. You are not payed. You are a man with a bike, that's it. Just another man. If you think you are better than me, good for you, but that gives you no more rights than I have. Stay out of my way, and I'll stay out of yours. If you have a problem with this, bring it on.
ReplyDeleteAs I read through this thread I find myself incredulous. WTF. Full grown people are requesting permission to wear an article of clothing. Really? Now having said that I recognize the inherent danger in upsetting people and risking an adverse behavioral action predicated upon your actions. If you are comfortable wearing, doing or being something. Then do it. It is a free country. However be prepared to face the consequences of your actions if you are faking things. Life can often come down to choices, actions, reactions, and consequences. I am middle aged, a veteran, and recently learned to ride a motorcycle and bought a Kawasaki cruiser bike. I paid little for it. It is reliable and fun to ride. The thing that confounds me about this entire thread is the conformity by the official clubs. Rules, regulations, etc are rules, regulations, etc regardless of what their origin is. This notion seems to be in direction contravention to the "ride hard, die free" mantra repeated everywhere.
ReplyDeleteAll these people talking about its a free country and all that shit. Go wear a red bandana and walk through a crip neighborhood in Los Angeles. You won't make it out alive. But you're free to wear whatever you want. Just like you're free to say whatever yout want but there's consequences for everything you do whether you like it or not. All I have to say to you, is, you've been warned. Go out fakin it and doing "whatever you want" if you want to. Just don't be surprised when someone who doesn't give a fuck about jail time checks your ass.
ReplyDeleteI guess this article is supposed to help your case? Or make you more "real" and more "badass" than the biker image that movie and tv studios cultivate? Dangerous Dan can be dangerous all he wants, he can go stabbing all the low-self-esteem "RUBS" and posers all day, but at the end of all of it, I promise that riding a two-tired ball-hugger, wearing a leather vest with a special patch, and wielding a sharp object do not a man make. It doesn't take courage to stab a man; it takes courage to mind your business, treat others with respect (even when they don't deserve it), and let people be who they're going to be, "unique" or not. That poser wouldn't be wearing a silly "fake" patch in the first place if the "real" MC wasn't riding around falsely convincing others that they're cooler than your grandma. There's nothing cool about any of it.
ReplyDeleteI believe the concept of the original article was to make people aware of how some MC's view the wearing of rockers and patches plus the dangers of doing so, not to justify its rights and wrongs.
ReplyDeleteI belong to a UK military supporting charitable riders organisation that wears jackets and patches I also belong to a motorcycle club that does have rockers and patches but we are certainly not a 1% club nor do we pretend to be. 99.9% of the time we have little or no problem with any other clubs or organisations although in some area's there have been some minor incidents.
As much as I/we are extremely proud of our organisation and club we are not out to give a false impression and always have to consider the integrity of our organisation and club. The general rule for us is that should any occasion arise where the wearing our jacket/cutte appears to be causing offence to someone and we are asked to take it off then the recommendation from our organisation is to comply. Yes it is really annoying but better than some potential consequences; also doing so will hopefully not bring our organisation or club into conflict with any other group or bring negative publicity which is contrary to our aims.
Should we ever experience an incident such as this we might then ask our organisation or club officers to politely approach the group who seemed to be offended to try to address any issues.
I know it may seem to some to be a somewhat crazy not being able to wear certain rockers or patches for fear of causing offence with consequences but unfortunately that is the world we live in.
Thanks..."Sash". I actually enjoyed reading your blog. I fit into your category #4 as I'm just a regular guy with a BMW bike. I love bikes, but I don't even wear the goodies the dealership gave me. I do laugh at the Wannabes that roar around my suburban 'hood making asses of themselves. Maybe, they need a good ass-whoopin' by a 1%er.
ReplyDeleteso I have waited awhile to get rockers for my vest.with my music bands name on top and bastards on bottom. didn't want to piss off or dis any bikers . patches came with mc patch but was not going to use it...just top and bottom is that fine......not a biker
ReplyDeleteWell. I have Harley Davidson patch on my back and Nomad bottom rocker. 3 "I rode to Sturgis" patches, Road King and US, Cali and HWY 66 patches. I was in Sturgis in August and nobody said a word to me. The same in LA, where we have a lot of Vagos and Mongols.
ReplyDeleteWhat about not even wearing a cut just a bandana on your face black green whatever to keep the wind, rocks dirt out is that bad
ReplyDeleteAfter reading 95% of the comments, all I can say is Wow. God help us all. It's pretty simple and straight forward. If you're not in a 1% club, don't try to pass yourself off as such. If you're not in an MC, don't try to pass yourself off as such. If you desire to wear an MC Kutte, put in the time and sacrifice to earn it. In doing so, maybe you'll gain a different perspective as to respect for the MC's. 1% and others. As far as all the questions splitting hairs about what is acceptable and what is not, It common sense, or not. If you're not in an MC, don't try to look like you are. It's pretty simple, you wear a three piece Kutte, not the same as a vest with patches, there's an expectation and responsibilities that come with that. Again, EARNED. So much BS and unnecessary garbage posted on here. Only thing I can say is like the saying goes, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. My three cents.
